Busy Giving from Home

Posted by Mary Beth Radeck on June 3, 2020 at 9:00 AM

Eliyah, one of our transitions specialists, has been using her time at home to sew cloth masks and donate them.

“I’m donating to a variety of places varying from nursing homes to essential workers at grocery stores,” Eliyah explained as she finishes the masks she made in April.  “It’s also critical to reach out to the community and see which local businesses have a need. Many grocery stores have made masks mandatory for their workers, and with the shortages of disposables, and the risk of reuse, many are seeking donated cloth masks.”

Anyone looking to donate masks can visit https://www.weneedmasks.org where to find instructions for making masks, as well as an extensive list of locations in need, organized by state. They list the style and number of masks needed by each location, as well as the preferred way of receiving them.

Eliyah is a transition specialist with Caring Transitions but also a costume and robotics designer. She says that many essential employees are using masks with cloth ties instead of elastic to prevent having their ears rubbed raw.  To address this need, Eliyah’s robotics club is now producing 3D printed ‘ear savers’ that hold mask elastic away from the ears, and they are now printing them for distribution.

Eliyah aspires to merge her two passions and design wearable technology one day, after college, of course. We are lucky to have her spirit and ingenuity on our team!
